(Re)Claim Singapore! Open call to emerging Singaporean artists for installation artworks to be presented in the iconic Raffles Hotel.
Chan Hampe Galleries is calling for applications for installation artworks from emerging Singaporean artists to be prominently featured in a window display of the Raffles Hotel shopping arcade facing North Bridge Road.
The (Re)Claim Singapore! project has the primary purpose of elevating the stature of Singaporean artistic practice for local and international audiences by championing Singapore’s next generation of visual arts practitioners. The project will provide emerging Singaporean artists with direct financial assistance to cover production costs and presents a high profile presentation opportunity by utilising a high traffic display window within an iconic Singapore landmark, the Raffles Hotel.
Artists are asked to respond to the unique social, historical, and cultural significance of Raffles Hotel and its wider environs of the Bras Basah Cultural District. The landscape of Singapore from several perspectives has changed significantly in recent years and many familiar and cherished local landmarks have been lost to this rapid process of modernisation. Raffles Hotel is one of few such gems to remain and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of her innumerable fans, both in Singapore and abroad. It is with this in mind that this project envisages artists to “reclaim” Raffles Hotel as a continuingly relevant cultural and architectural landmark, which artists can use as an inspiration and platform to comment on contemporary Singapore.
For the second edition, A total of 3 artists will be selected to display their artwork for a 1-month period. The final 3 artists will be selected by Mr Robert B. Epp – Gallery Director, ADM Gallery, School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University.
