The Jazz Weekend Workshop is a new component we are adding to the Bright Young Things, which includes talks by the Bright Young Things mentor Joshua Wan (piano),Tony Makarome (bass) and Soh Wen Ming (drums) and for participants to learn more about the history of jazz, jazz elements and other activities. Anyone who is interested to know more about jazz can sign up for this workshop!
Bright Young Things is a Mosaic Music Festival component since 2007 aiming to identify, nurture and support the next generation of jazz talents in Singapore. To be eligible for the Bright Young Thing auditions, participants will have to attend the Jazz Weekend workshop held on 11 – 12 Dec 11am – 6pm. This is important because they will be able to meet the mentors (Joshua Wan, Dr Tony Makarome and Soh Wen Ming) and experience firsthand the ways they teach.
Participants between the ages of 15 and 25 who can proficiently play at least one musical instrument can also choose to audition to be a Bright Young Thing between 5 and 6pm each day. They will be assessed both as a solo performer, and also as a musician in a band. Candidates are asked to prepare a medium tempo jazz standard, and will be tested on sight-reading and improvisation.
This programme expects all Bright Young Things to:
- Attend a minimum of 15 rehearsal sessions (sectional and ensemble playing) from January through the first week of March 2011. Practice sessions will likely fall on one weekday and one weekend evening. Core instructor-mentors are Joshua Wan, Dr Tony Makarome, and Soh Wenming. There will also be guests mentors including Christy Smith, Tim O’Dwyer, and Melissa Tham, just to name a few.
- Perform two Living Room sets of 30 minutes each on 12 and 13 March 2011, 5:30-6pm. Living Room shows are held at the Esplanade Concourse, a free public space located between Theatre and Concert Hall.
- Attend a workshop conducted by Artist-in-Residence Charlie Haden and Quartet West
- Observe and participate in the outdoor Jam Session on 11 March from 7-7:40pm, and Band Dynamics Workshop by The Bad Plus on 13 March at 2:00pm.
